My 28 Excel after 4 years of work
2 Attachment(s)
Well After 4 years I am getting towards the end of my project. I still have to blueprint the hull and finish the cabin interior. I don't have any before and afters to post but those of you that know the 28 Excel you can see what has bee done.
What you can see is the work that went into the hull. I had a rotted fire wall as well as the stringers forward of the fire wall. They were all gutted and replaced with a composite material Called Sea Cast. Its many times stronger than wood and will never rot. We also integrated the Engine stringers to the main stringers and fire wall 10X's better than the factory and added extra bulk heads. The hull and deck were re bonded and machine screwed with lock nuts and a aluminum backing plated around the whole boat. The hull is sold as a rock. The motor is a 468 ci , 8.9:1 pistons , 177 blower with inter cooler , 6 psi boost , Custom cam by Jason Saris @ Performance Marine LG |

The drive is a Imco 2" shorty with Max Machine Works parts in the upper.
I am using a Stern Jack that I modified my self so that I can have my external steering mounted to the Stern Jack. When I am at full trim my X dimension is 3 1/2 " :D . Stock is 7 1/2" :( I am using 280 K planes and line to the Rt side of the drive is the inter cooler pick up . |

The interior Was designed by my self with some help from my neighbor.
The front seats are from Twin Marine. The seat pedestals, center console, back seat and interior panels were made by me. The back seat is bolted to the boat in a way that it is acting like a bulk head. the front seats and console are bolted together as one and are held down by over 40 screws to the reinforced floor. Trust me the seats don't move . The dash / helm were all through bolted and reinforced along with what ever I could put extra bolts & screws into. What is not installed yet is the port side grab handle with the trim controls mounted in them, That is being painted and should be mounted this week. |

Paul - wow what a transformation - Looks great. Couple questions - Looks like lots of guages - what are they all. Also what's up with what looks like a shifter in the center and one on the driver side. What material did you make the dash out of? What prop are you runing that got you 83, I'm stuck at 80 but have other issues.

Re: My 28 Excel after 4 years of work
Thanks everyone for the compliments.
Unfortunately I blew the motor a few weeks ago. I had a head gasket leak and melted the #6 piston. I will be building a 700 hp motor for her the winter. I want to see 86+ :evilb: Hay Strippoker did you have to cut the fire wall on yours to fit the blower pulley. I want yo use a 6-71 or 8-71 blower but I dont think I have the clearance to the fire wall. I know I will have to cut the top of the deck where the hatch sits. I am not sure that when I replaced the fire wall that it is in the same place. It might be a 1/2" closer to the motor. What do you think?? |

Al The gauge panel was there when I got the boat. I just added more gauges and covered it with white sign vinyl. Notice I do not have a speedo. I replaced it with a compass that was necessary for OPA. This winter I will also adding communicators. I no longer am thinking of running OPA , Im sticking to poker runs for now. But I am setting it up to race if I change my mind. The prop I run was made by Bret at B blades. Its by far the best prop I ever run on the boat. Its a very thin , labed and re shaped to create bow lift. Its night and day compared to a stock prop. |

Also I had a Barry grant electric pump mounted on the fire wall .It had a hard time sucking fuel. I ended up mounted it as low as I could on that fire wall close to the floor by that drain hole .If I was low on fuel it wold lose prime. I also change out the pick ups inside the fuel tank to a # 10, Also on the stock motor mounts ,the TQ of the motor cracked the stringer on the Port side from the motor pulling up on it in that area, it also cracked on the outside in that area.I am thinking that this was causing a hook in the hull on that side from the TQ.I never broke a mount though. I still have the mirror I could trace out the hole if ya need.To cut the hole I took carboard and cut it to fit in to the lip in the compartment like the hatch sit in taped it in the back like a hinge ,I got a closer cut this way ,also had to cut more out of the back to clear it If ya need any help just hollar Rob :drink: not a digital pick,it large though :drink: http://www2.filehost.to/files/2006-1...clear_pick.jpg |

Re: My 28 Excel after 4 years of work
I just made a deal on a 540 with a 8/71 . She should be stupid fast :evilb: Now I need a stock pile of drives to blow :evilb:
Hay strip , I need to see the photos of your old boat with the blower in it. I want to see what kind of hack job I have to do in order to fit the monster under the hatch. |

did you have this boat in the seneca lake pirates run this past weekend?
|
Sorry for the delay in posting
Yes we did. It was only our second time out with the new motor. Unfortunately the week before at the NYC Poker Run I blew my max machine worx upper unit before we ever got to see what she could do. At the pirates run I was running my spare bravo upper and 26 B1 prop I ran last year. To be safe I never ran over 4500 rpm. We didn’t want to blow another drive and ruin our weekend. We might have not been at the front of the pack but we sure had a great time and will be back next year. |
Any new numbers yet??
|
Just picked up the new upper unit friday. We been at lake george all weekend and didnt install it yet. It should be all ready for the scandaga poker run on saturday. I just need to find some props to start testing with . Im looking for a 30 or 32.
with the 26P Bravo 1 I been running, Even at 5000 rpm,s the motor never goes into boost |
That doesn't sound good not making boost at 5000 rpms. I would think you would be making tons of boost at that RPM.
|
I've got s Labbed 28 and stock 32. Sounds like you need a road trip to Lake Ontario.

with the 28 five blade we seen boost up around 4-5 psi at 5000 rpm . The motor was set up to run 7 psi @ 5600 @ 820 Hp |
sold the boat or what´s up?
|
I don't see or hear about the 28' Excel very often. Was it a low production number boat or what?
|
Your boat looks great, I'm glad to see that there are 28 excel projects out there like yours. I'm the proud owner of a 89 28 excel, procharged 468.
