What does SQE stand for
|
Jody I will post some more pics next week. We could not get enough fuel down the motors withthe carbs so we just finished the monster fuel injection systems. The specs are insane. The hp should go up too somewhere in the 1100 to 1200 hp range. Can't wait to go out next week. Good luck with the boat search.

A lot more info on Larry Smith Scarabs is in the giant offshore history book SEARACE by John Crouse.
HORBA still has some orignial copies left at the old 1989 price. www.historicraceboats.com |
Stupid question, or observation?
Every Larry Smith 38 I've ever seen had a flat deck and the wide cockpit. They didn't have the 6" wide flat area outside he cockpit just aove the rub rail. Were there Larry Smith editions of the KV, Miami Vice type scarabs, or 377 raised decks? Gary |
Yes, 2 different decks, maybe more. I know there were 2 made in the early 90's with a 3rd deck type but not sure who designed it, may have been designed by Eddie Morenz at Great American Concepts here in SoCal. One was red with staggered turbo engines (Sean Mcwhinney) and the other was white with triples.
From what I heard, it seems that Larry built his boats with his own deck designs, and then Wellcraft was free to use the same deck from Larry or create their own deck. So some of the Wellcraft decks look like Larry's and some don't. That's my understanding. Hope this helps. |

Sorry for the long blast from the 80's but it's amazing to see a boat pop up that was right beside yours for many weeks. And no, I have no idea where my boat is, I sold it to a guy who boated on Lake Superior in the mid-1990's. If anyone ever encounters an 87 38 KV with ASD8's on it I'm sure that is it. 1988 was the last year for that model and I was later told I was the only one who ever rigged a Wellcraft boat that way. There are some Larry Smiths out there with Arnesons though.
donīt know if it had originally ASDs thou. |

Havenīt been in contact with the current owner yet lately, Rest assured I will forward the info...and Hannu if you read this...go ahead yourself as Iīm kinda busy right now ;-) |

We are just testing with the new motors. I want to run bridge to bridge next year on the delta to see how fast she is now, looking for 125 mph. Mainly I just like to run. The boat is set up for low rpm/high mph. 70 mph is onlt 3600-3700 rpm so we run alot in the 70-80 mph range. Like to run up and down the coast in so-cal. Will be out again next weekend for the SCOPE run. This one is definitely a keeper for a while . One of the best balanced v-huls I have ever been in. Did you know Jody?
Thank you, GoCiggie |
