My buddy is looking at a 1982 Scarab Special Edition. How could he find out if its a kevlar or not?

The vin ends in 377SE, and has the notch in the transom.

Kevlar cloth looks like 14K gold. Check in hidden areas that are not painted, etc. You need to find an area where you can actually see the cloth. Woven roving will have about 10 rovings per inch in each direction, and you will be able to see this encapsulated in resin and will have a gold/amber hue. It also fuzzes up when you hit it with a grinder-

Fiberglass cloth in resin does not do this and you will not be able to see individual strands, only the surface texture.

FYI structural Kevlar (49) is about 2/3 the weight of fiberglass fabric and about 3 times stronger.

Boats built with it are generally vacuum bagged which produces a hull with pretty much the optimum resin/fabric mix.

What are the first three letters in the HIN? Wellcraft used WEL, My Larry Smith Scarab has TSC.
