Default Newbie, just bought a 21' Scarab

Hey guys I first want to say great site, even though most of your boats make mine look like canoe, but you have to start somewhere right?

I just picked up a 21' 1986 Scarab, it's gonna need a little work for the upholstery and paint and a few other small things here and there but I think its going to be a great project and fun boat once it's done. It has a crate 305 with a few upgrades, i'll post some more pics a little later on.

Just moved the Portofino to Texas--she arrived yesterday and am preparing for my move aboard. I have been wanting to do this for over two years now, seems the stars lined up for me finally.

I appreciate the warm welcome guys! I'm gonna try and get some more pictures for you guys up here as soon as possible. This is my first decently sized boat, had a lil ski boat in college, and decided to step up to this for now. I thought this would be a good started boat for being only 24, and move up along the way.

I took it out this weekend actually and had a few issues. First I couldn't get it to plane out no matter what I did, unless I had a buddy sit on the bow. Next it decided to stall out, and run at idle, but as soon as I would give it some gas, it would stall out again. I'm guessing it's something along the lines of the Carb and fuel, but we will see here within the next few days. The boat is not perfect in looks, which I knew when I bought it, but I was under the impression that it ran like a top, and did when I bought it.

I've been slacking lately, and have been working way too much, and it seems like any chance I have to get this thing on the water the weather has been bad. Well after doing some small tweaks here and there, I've ran into a few things.

There is an electrical short somewhere, and when I cannot operate two things at once (ex, engine cover, either lifting it or lowering it, and blower without one slowing down or even stopping. noticed with the radio first, and both of my batteries are good, as well as my alternator.

Had to adjust the timing a bit, and before that I rebuilt the carb, and replaced the plugs. Now, I can get the boat to plane which I was having a problem doing before, but top speed is absolutely horrible, and I can't get over about 3,500 rpm at WOT.

I don't know if the top speed is mostly related to the prop, or the back end being heavy and just not enough power. At this point I'll take any suggestion/advice that anyone wants to throw out there.

I will get more pictures up soon as well of the interior and engine and what not, I didn't forget about you Apathetic!
