1997 31 Scarab

Hi...just bought the boat...awesome !!! I have a question: when did they stop refering to models, or do they still ? I have heard of thunders, vipers..etc. What designates each model ? I was told they were just an upgraded package ? If so, what were the upgrades ? Thanks. :drink:

humpster 04-03-2010 07:36 AM

which 31 did you buy was it the one in pa?

tinman565 04-03-2010 06:52 PM

No...it was here in Western NY...nice boat.

POWERPLAY J 04-03-2010 06:56 PM

31 Vipers were the flatdeck Larry Smith models I believe, The Thunders were the Wellcraft...

fastscarab22 04-03-2010 07:37 PM

Was that the one in east auroa, If it is that was a good running boat , started at the dock one time and drowned out the band , that was funny they just stopped until he pulled away

humpster 04-03-2010 08:42 PM

when was the last year they made the 31can't remember seeing one after 98 or 99

POWERPLAY J 04-03-2010 08:46 PM

I think around 2000 the discontinued the 31 and made the 33 AVS but I could be wrong...

tinman565 04-04-2010 08:37 AM

yes..its the one from east aur. I'm the guy who bought the carb off you..I went to Excel to pick it up remember ?

fastscarab22 04-04-2010 07:57 PM

I wanted to look at my self to buy , but i dont have the trucK to pull it. It is a really good boat, what did you do with the other boat , and i would love a ride in this one,,, didnt yiu get prop threw me also scott 866-3468

tinman565 04-04-2010 10:37 PM

I still have the other boat. Gotta few people eyeing it...nobody with the cash yet. I havent got around to advertising it. I'll call you tomorrow. I'm looking for a few more things. I need 2 more Holley HP500 carbs, and maybe a 25 Mirage Plus LH. Thanks for all your help.

Oh, anybody know when the last year for the "Thunder" option was ?

My freind has a 99 AVS, which bye the way is shorter than my 31.

humpster 04-05-2010 06:15 PM

who has the faster boat is power the same in each boat

Jeff P31 04-05-2010 06:24 PM

My 31 is a lot faster only because I have a lot more power. 750 vs 415 With the same power the avs would be a lot faster

fastscarab22 04-05-2010 06:55 PM

Can you give me some info about the old boat, i dont rember what it was, and hp people are aways looking scott

DirtyMoney 04-05-2010 07:40 PM

In length . The actual hull is the same length but drives are up under the swim platform which is molded into the hull on the avs. So when you add the drives on my 31 it is longer than buddies 33.

tinman565 04-08-2010 09:41 AM

Somebody's gotta have a connection...gotta know someone whos got one. I need 1 more hp500 Carb (800 cfm). C'mon guys...lol

chuckcrick 05-10-2010 09:23 PM

I see you posted 700hp; have you run WOT yet? I am running twin 600 and would be like to know how well you are running and what setup you have? Bravo1, prop, rpm etc.

I got my carbs from Alexi @ boostpower or call teague marine. You might even get lucky and they may have some takeoffs. I love my 31; I just about got it where I like it

chuckcrick 05-10-2010 09:42 PM

31 last year

BTW - The last year the 31 was produced was 98 technically; the 33 AVS was introduced that same year with limited production. I have seen a 98 non AVS; my suspicion is they had some carry over from 97. They are rare but exist.

Last year I purchased a 31 Viper flat deck ... 1992 model ... but its listed as a 31 Thunder on the title . After looking in a old powerboat magazine classified ( 2000 ) I found the boat listed . The owner stated ( One of a kind ) Viper deck on a Thunder hull . What is the difference ? I have nothing locally to compare it to. My hull has a small 10 inch pad running the last 10 or 12 foot of the running surface. Repowered this winter with 785 hp intercooled blower engines. Hope to see mid 90's ???

tinman565 05-15-2010 08:14 PM

So nobody knows what the "Thunder" option was/is ? What year did it end ? C'mon people...think !!!!! lol :drink:

I have a friend that has a 31 LS Scarab and his girlfriend has a 31 Thunder. I believe they are different hulls but am not sure. I believe "Thunder" was just a name they used after Excel and not a package. I'll be visiting my buddy soon and see what he knows. He's a fan! he also has a 38...:drink:

POWERPLAY J 05-16-2010 01:21 AM

P.S. Thats alot of ponies for that hull! I'm guessing your gonna hit the #'s your looking for.

tinman565 05-16-2010 08:46 AM

Thanks powerplay....see if you can get that info, and what year her boat is. :ernaehrung004:

bck 05-17-2010 02:25 AM

I can't swear to this, but if memory serves the thunder option was a power upgrade to the already existing Wellcraft Scarab models.

Thank you sir. :drink:

Run_em_hard 05-19-2010 10:30 AM

I have a '92 Thunder. I was also lucky enough to find the attached sheet. I am not sure what the regular scarab came with but I know what my thunder has. Check out what it says the hull is made out of, maybe that is the biggest difference??? Also full hydraulic steering is standard and shore power. Yet mine doesn't have a fridge or electric bolsters.

Got a lil info. 31 Thunder is bigger than 31 Viper (different hull) There's rumor that Wellcraft made a few flatdecks but searching for a definite answer. Thunder was option package... Hope this helps a little

tinman565 06-06-2010 03:57 PM

grrrr...I know that it was an option...lol. I wanna know WHAT made it a thunder as opposed to not being one. Engine size ? Shore power ? Refrigerator ? Pop-up cleats ?...lol. Keep working on it sir....I'm gonna start having to grade your work on a curve...hahaha. You figure this out, and the beers on me. :drink:
