How am I loading my Scarab wrong
So I dont want to start a "power loading" thread but I need some help. I have the 22 Scarab and whenever I load on the trailer the bow ends up about 2-3 inches from the roller.
I get it all the way up against the roller, winch tight and when I get to the rigging lane it is like 2-3 inches away. I did get it once but no idea how. I have tried pulling in farther, powering on and I need some sugestions. |
Well every boat is differnt but what I do is back my trailer till the fenders are just under the water, drive the boat on trailer up to the roller trim everything up get out the boat and winch it up till the bow hook touchs the roller...I have a 28ft powerquest...

Not sure if this will help, but unroll your steel cable ALL the way and rewind up TIGHT and even on the spool. They can get out of wack, and jump back when you're winding the boat up.

Is it a steep launch ramp?
My 30" scarab has done that to me a couple times on a steep ramp, it is the angle of the keel when floating and then tips up when on the trailer leaving a gap on the bow roller. I now winch a little further than it seems I should on the steeper ramps and it works out great |
drive very slowly till the boat is completly out of water... should be fine... as good as the above suggestion...

I always winch it all the way up, then put on my front safety strap so I know it's not going anywhere. I've seen too many winch straps break...

First off I have a winch STRAP not a CABLE, should I change?
It is a steep ramp and that was one of my thoughts was as I pull out the boat sits back causing the boat to raise away from the stop so to speak. I always hook the safety chain before pulling out of the water. I dont know that I can winch it up further because I tighten the u-bolt up to the stop now. |
my bow eye is always above the bow stop
I have never had a boat that has the winch mounted too low to pull the eye above the stop and I prefer the straps over cables just make sure you have a heavy duty strap and it is in good condition of course you need to pull it out of the water slowly also |
put another strap going from the bow eye down to the trailer somewhere and it wont move
|
Does your strap come off the winch on the bottom side or the top side?
Mine used to do something similar when I had the strap coming off the winch on the bottom. Unwound and re-wound it so that it comes off the top of the drum and it doesn't do it anymore. |
jbraun2828...that is what I end up doing in the rigging lane is running a ratchet strap around the lower trailer and ratcheting it down on to the roller bumper. If I dont it bounces off the roller all the way home.
c_deezy...I will check this thanks We have steep ramps so if I back in far enough to pull (not power) the boat to the roller my transom is about 18-24 inches off the bunk. So I left it more out last night and kinda winch and powered, it left it about an inch away. It has to be lowering the transom on the way out of the water causing the bow to raise away from the roller. I will check the strap. |
ratchet that second strap tight before you pull out of the water and the boat wont move. It will hold the bow down while your pulling out.

This sounds exactly what happens to my boat when the strap has come undone on the inside of the spool.
Unwind your strap ALL the way and see if you need to reattach it to the winch. It's very likely the strap is broken and the tension of the spool is holding your boat down. This has happened twice to me. I unwound it, reattached and problem solved. |
I may be getting close to solving this with everyones help.
The strap was still attached to the spool securely. My winch is attached below my roller, the framing for the winch and roller looks like a 7. The roller is up on the hoprizontal (top) end and the winch is on the vertical piece up near the corner. My strap was wound so it came off the top. I moved it to come off the bottum. Last night I floated on the trailer, and the bow ratchited down to the roller much easier. I got to the rigging lane and it was just a hair off the roller (maybe put a pen in between) much better than before. I was able to crank it down tight which I could not do before with the winch alone. So the boat still moved up, not back on the trailer. I got home and loosened the strap the bow moved up away from the roller. I noticed the trailer flexes also when I crank down or let loose. The flex takes placed between the wheels and front. It moves down if I crank the boat to the roller and releases when I release the strap. I guess I am to inexperienced to know if this is normal or not. The boat is not sliding back, but the bow is raising up. I guess I am wondering if bunks need lowered/raised or the roller needs moved? |
