Gauges
I have a 29 foot, 1994 Scarab, I want to upgrade the gauges, what brand should I buy? And are they a bolt in design or will I have to improvise? Thanks.

Auto Meter Marine Gauges ---- they make a small cat. for the marine version and yes they are a direct bolt -in if you use the same dia. gauge. .The nice thing about the gauges if some thing goes wrong with them you can send them back in and they can be repaired with out a big hassel

Thanks for the reply, I`ll check into them, I use an autometer oil pressure gauge on my race car and it has never failed.

Im in the same boat (no pun intended).... I am upgrading the gauges on my 38' scarab... I wanted to go with gaffrig and put an order in through their website...it has been a week and they have responded, charged my card, or anything... I would like to find a gaffrig dealer and maybe just buy them from there....pretty crazy that they would just blow off a $1k order but whatever floats their boat...I'm just suprised...

The original brand in my 1990 was VDO. They served me well for about 15 years. I tried another popular brand, but they fell short of the intended mark from a quality and service standpoint. I went back to VDO with their Ocean Series. Do a search for VDO gauges.

I`m going to look at them all, I have the boat down now, had to go through a motor. The gauges look like a pain though.
I like the wrap idea, looks good. |
Going through the gauges will be a cake walk if you've already been through the engines. :D Whatever brand you decide on, the process is pretty simple. I used the camera on my Droid for picts of the dash and behind, some up close to capture the existing wiring. With the picts on my Droid, I could refer to any specific gauge pict for reference. I basically took 1 front shot, 1 back shot. I also used a bit of tape to label the wires. Doing 1 gauge at a time would make it easier, but won't work if you're going to paint or wrap the panels. Zip ties will help you keep the bundles together, label them.
The wrap idea is brilliant, wish I had thought of it. In the end I used an automotive paint then clear coat. There is another attractive option to update the panels, it's called Hydrographic Printing or Water Transfer Printing. Do a search for it on Youtube, it will blow you away. Here's an example from a guy who does it. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w.../raymarine.jpg |
Found some more info. Do a Youtube search for hydrographic printing, several companies show how the process works.
Also found the link to the guy who did the gauge/electronics covers above. I'm not affiliated in any way to this company, just saw some of their work recently and thought it might be something I'll do myself if I find the time to take my dash apart again this winter. www.proimagingonline.com |
