Hblair your boat is looking great. I was wondering what are you doing for fuel pumps after installing the blowers, electric or mechanical?
where did you purchase your hatch scoops from? they are going to look nice set in place.

hblair 03-22-2016 09:33 AM

Thanks Hull. We still have the mechanical pumps. Was planning on going bigger fuel lines and monitoring the fuel pressure. I got the scoops from cp performence. They are advertised as being sturdy, not like automotive units. They seem heavy enough to stand on.

hullofjustis 03-22-2016 09:59 AM

Do you have the block mounted fuel pumps? Or v- belt driven fuel pump?
When i had my single engine scarab 502 with the same blower set up you have and a v- belt driven fuel pump/ water pump. We separated the merc fuel pump and bought a holley performance fuel pump and separated it and put the 2 parts together, it would be okay for cruise and up until 5000 rpm, 5000rpm -wot the fuel pressure would start dropping 7psi to about 3 psi and i would have to pull off the throttles. I eventually put an electric pump in line with the mechanical that i would flip a switch if i saw the pressure start dropping. This was 15 years ago so the pumps may be a bit better now.
Just something to keep an eye out for. If you have block mounted pumps i would recommend putting a performance pump on. I would hate to see you spend all that $$$ and lean out.
If you have the v-belt driven fuel pump, keith eickert has a real nice back half pump that is supposed to keep up with 2 carbs per motor

hblair 03-22-2016 02:58 PM

I was running these units here..
https://www.holley.com/products/fuel...s/parts/12-835

I called my guy at o'reillys, he called holley (the support number you see posted on their website is useless, hold pergatory, etc.) the guy at holley recommended this unit for dual carbs with a blower, and increasing hose size...
https://www.holley.com/products/fuel...arts/12-454-13

I told my guy to order these, they are supposed to be in by the end of the week.

hblair 03-22-2016 03:41 PM

We're checking on this one now..

hullofjustis 03-23-2016 07:33 AM

the holley will work great.
what kind of horsepower are you hoping for or are you going to dyno them? I bet you are excited to see what it will run?

hblair 03-23-2016 07:40 AM

We don't plan on dynoeing them, not right now anyway. Your guess is as good as mine on the horsepower. Looking forward to the increase in power though. I've only driven it an hour or so after the stroker kit/roller cam upgrade in the summer. So this will be a whole different boat. From what I've read I'll have to take it easy to keep from damaging the drives.

hullofjustis 03-23-2016 07:58 AM

what boost are you going to be running? if you give me cam specs compression ratio ci I can try running on my desk top dyno! I wouldn't say it is 100% accurate but it will give you a ball park.

no worries you can always get these. lol just kidding

hblair 03-25-2016 10:29 PM

We won't be running much boost. Supposed to be between 4-5. Maybe later we get heads and cams better suited for blowers, and lower the compression ratio and then turn up the boost. By the way thanks mild thunder for the advice a few weeks ago.

The pulleys and other stuff came in from the blower shop today. We plan to work on the boat all day tomorrow. Should get a lot done. Today we got some stuff painted and the steering wheel put together...

Didn't get as much done today as I wanted too. Had a surprise easter dinner at my moms lol. We got the higher volume fuel pumps installed (right side was about a 2 hour job), got the v belt pulleys, and blower pulleys installed and blower belts installed. We'll have to get a couple smaller v belts as the pulleys are a slightly different diameter. Ran some more of the hydraulic steering hoses. Did some more work on the hatch scoops. We should be on the water in 3 weeks or so...

Got my machine shop friend to make some thermostat housings. I think they're gonna work well. Hopefully they'll work better than the wrong intake gaskets I used. Got the correct ones coming tomorrow.

You need to get this one done & get started on the other scarab

hblair 04-21-2016 03:57 PM

I've gotta get this boat water worthy. We're supposed to go to Gulf Shores next weekend. And if I don't bring this boat with us my wife is gonna tar and feather me. We'll jump all over the other one before too long.

css19 04-21-2016 05:01 PM

nice work and very nice boat, but when you make new stringers and fiberglass, why did not you put the top coat as the last hand? much less porous than fiberglass
have you reviewed fiberglass and sought signs of osmosis, black dots in fiberglass?
I read a lot of projects, restoration of old boats, and no one mentioned osmosis fiberglass

hullofjustis 04-22-2016 06:47 AM

hblair have you water tested at all yet?

hblair 04-22-2016 08:53 PM

I haven't seen any black dots in the glass, looks healthy to me.
No water test yet. I had to get more carbs. 600 CFM Holley blower carbs with mech secondary supposed to be in tomorrow. We'll see...

sprink58 04-23-2016 10:55 AM

Good luck...I know you're anxious !!

hblair 04-27-2016 02:01 PM

Long story short, pulled the blowers because of problems with ignition. At the time we weren't sure where the problem was. We are running the air gap intakes and holley marine 750's now. We will see about putting the blowers on when we get back from gulf shores.

In the middle of all this we installed hydraulic steering. I sent the cylinders to latham and had them reworked and rechromed, also getting the blower scoops installed...

BTW...what did you shoot the hull with ? Imron ? Just curious.

hblair 04-27-2016 06:02 PM

Thanks. The sides and transom Sherwin Williams ultra 7000 base/clear. The bottom single stage.

Ran the boat today. Ran strong, steering is awesome. Cannot say enough about the hydraulic steering. Unbelievable difference.

We have a steering hose leak. Right drive fluid reservoir hose is leaking. Leak under left motor(not sure what). And... < drumroll please >. Blown head gasket on Rt side of left motor. The party never ends...

South bound and down loaded up and headed to gulf shores boys. After a 2 week marathon of various issues to resolve on the boat, we are going to use it. When we get back we plan to spend most of our time working on the 38 footer.

I've got some video my daughter took from the beach but I can't get it to play. Here's a video I took of my daughters boyfriend driving, Shon to the left, and my daughter Lauren.

We ran the boat about 80 miles this weekend. The boat was running right at 70 with eight people and a full tank. Turns out the 4 inch pulleys we're running on the blowers aren't putting out hardly any boost. When we get back we'll swap to the 3.5 inch pulleys and prolly reprop. Good times!

sprink58 05-08-2016 09:57 AM

Honestly...70 with that load is very good...looks and sounds like all went well...great looking bunch of folks.

hblair 05-08-2016 11:26 PM

Thanks Sprink, thankfully they got their looks from their mom. Here's a few videos my daughter took from the beach. The quality is not great but at least you can hear the engines in these...

lol Yeah I actually thought about naming the next boat that. Thanks to her...

hullofjustis 08-18-2016 05:03 PM

Hey Hblair,
unfortunately I have water coming out of my forward stringers and I am clearly going to have to do something with them. my main question is in your pictures when you pulled the decking off, was there any foam in the outside stringer compartment or is there just open space?

hblair 08-23-2016 11:41 PM

Sorry didn't see this, haven't been on the forum in a few days. There was just open space in mine. No foam at all.

In other news, I spun 2 main bearings in my starboard motor 5 weeks ago tomorrow. Motors back together and should be in the boat by the end of the week.

hullofjustis 08-24-2016 06:34 AM

How much boost are you running? What did the boat end up running?

So i have replace my rear stringers and transom in 2010 however i found that my forward stringers have water in them and that they have delamintaed. I really do not want to pull or have the place to pull the deck off the hull. So i am looking at different options to fix this. I have thought about cutting the deck and reglassing it when i am finish. Any suggestions/

hblair 08-24-2016 09:18 AM

It was actually 5 weeks ago yesterday. I figured out my left motor had the #2 and #4 plug wires crossed and I fixed that and put the boat in the water that day. I got into a race with a bass boat, outran him in time to look down and see low oil pressure on right motor. Long story short, My blower intakes were leaking oil between the heads over the back of the block. The gap there is wider than with the regular air gap edelbrock intakes. I didn't know this and couldn't see it. Everything was fine til at high rpms, oil went over the back of the block. I plan to make a frame to lift the engine with the blowers already bolted in place so I can see how well the intake is sealed before the motors go in the boat. I have also upgraded to 10 quart milodon pans during this time.

I'm still running larger pulleys on the blowers so I'm not running much boost yet.
I was only running low 70's with 21 pitch props (supposed to be hammered to 22 pitch by prop guy). I bought some 25 pitch props that I am installing now. So speed oughta be getting better. I can't ever get around to fine tune anything because it keeps breaking and blowing up...

hblair 08-24-2016 09:30 AM

Man I really don't know how you can get to anything on the stringers without peeling the deck off and pulling the liner out. If it helps, I left the deck and liner outside while we repaired our stringers. They are basically waterproof. Wish I had better news for you.

hblair 08-31-2016 10:34 PM

Finally got my motors ready to go back in hopefully tomorrow. Things always take about twice as long as planned on this boat..
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps4izu2ypt.jpg

hblair 09-12-2016 05:41 PM

Took her up to Florence Alabama this past weekend on the Tennessee River. I installed some 25 pitch props. Here's some videos of Shon and my son Dylan running 4500 rpm at 70mph. The left motor didn't want to spin any faster. We're thinking we had the timing a little to retarded on that side. We're gonna check into that. Lots of satisfaction seeing it back together and having no problems this weekend..
