The left motor didn't want to spin any faster. We're thinking we had the timing a little to retarded on that side. We're gonna check into that. Lots of satisfaction seeing it back together and having no problems this weekend..

I've got this one on ebay now. Who knows what will happen. Here's the link..

Are you seriously selling this after all the work that was done? Why ? YOU WILL PROBABLY MAKE MORE PARTING IT OUT UNFORTUNATELY
|
I have too much going on. One son has a 69 mustang we're restoring. About to buy a vw van for the other son. (Gonna need at least a paint job). I've got the 38 kaama to get done and I just bought a sailboat (sorry to come out of the closet on you lol) yes a sailboat in Tampa. And there's only one of me. Yes sadly it'd bring more parted out. We'll see what happens.
We're living in a crappy economy. Of course the president gets a pass from the media because of who he is. Sorry about getting political. In a perfect world the boat should be worth 50,000. Part of it is the limited audience there is for this boat. And part is the bad economy. |
A sailboat? :picard1:

Heath, want to pull my Scarab apart at the same time as yours Might be easier to do two at the same time. Your then be the 38' Scarab expert.

A very friendly hello to all of you
My name is Robert FRANK from Germany I own a 89 Wellcraft 210XL since summer 2013 and i could not resist to by another Wellcraft in summer 16 ......yes we are also stupid boaters here in Germany . I bought a Wellcraft 26 foot NOVA II with two 350 aboard .......i know engines are too small ,but it is what it is. Pre owner tried to sell it since 1 1/2 year on EBay ,he was asking 15.000Euro . After i visited him and we inspected the boat we met at 5000Euro. Kind of cheap but there is a lot of work to do ..... Engines are running a not getting hot or leaking ,engine oil is clean Port transom has freeplay ( new steering pin needed ) Exhaust system is switchable ,but the two port flaps are working only with manaul help (internal shaft corossion i guess) STBD flaps are workin perfekt but not sealing proper ...... Cockpit is faded away due to sun.......... No persenning at all, cause the old one was only to scrap I fear a boat this age will also have stringers and transom rott, we will see if i take her apart. Now aftr reading this resto thread i am kind of shocked about the Ebay Auction result ....10000 USD ???? It is a shame ,so much work and tlc and only this low result !? Heath , you have allready explained the reasons for this low result . Maybe the one and only solution it to part out the SCARAB, but again what a shame for all your work. Sorry i need to figure out how to upload pic´s |

Planning trip to bimini

Been a while since I posted to this thread. We've been using the boat a lot. On the way home from orange beach right now. We put about a hundred miles on the boat. It has been bulletproof if I'm not doing crazy things to break it. We got 1.3 mpg cruising at 2500-3000rpm. About 195 miles on a tank of gas.
I have reserved a room at.thr bimini sands resort in the Bahamas at the end of august/first week of September. Me my two boys and three friends will be making the trip. We plan to spend a night in Miami before leaving early Friday morning to cross over. Anybody here got any ideas of where we could flush when we get back that Sunday? Recommendations on where to launch? This might be the last hurrah for this boat before we swap all our hardware over to the 38 over the winter. links don't work for me...

even copied and pasted in a new screen...

I'll fix it when I get home. Something wrong with Photobucket tonight.

Make sure you take cash customs. Unless they have changed in the last couple years all they take is cash. Immigration did not cost if remember correctly. Quarantine flag to be totally correct.

So I basically just pull up to the dock with my quarantine flag on a pole, get out of the boat, walk to the airport? Does someone from there walk back to the boat to clear the guys with me or do I bring their passports with me? I've read where only the boat captain is supposed to get out of the boat for this.
|
We're down here in the Bahamas and I'm trying to post photos with bad wifi. I'll try again when we get to Miami. We had a great time down here.
|
Well here's a video anyway. Had a great time....

Planning on taking this boat to staniel cay in June. Upon inspection of everything I noticed where a previous had welded the right gimbal ring, the weld is cracking on the inside. I had a spare that we painted yesterday. We're gonna pull the right engine and replace the whole thing...

Got the skeg repaired on the left drive and decided to go ahead and repaint both drives. I’ll be changing the oil in them as well as the tranny’s and engines. Also have a leaking steering hose to replace also. I’ve decided to attempt a weld on the right gimbal ring crack. I’m pretty confident I’ll be able to clean it up and weld it right. If I don’t like the looks of it I’ll replace it. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b92b1fe1c.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8de54098b.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5223c9aba.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bfe2dd2cf.jpeg |
Job well done! |
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...803930487.jpeg Three burnt valves on the left motor lol. Bottom end is good. Should get the heads back this week. Gonna put it back together and run it a few weeks before we go on the big trip to staniel. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bbde98c4b.jpeg Removing the weiand 256 chargers for now, plan to upgrade to aluminum heads later and get the compression where it needs to be as well as bigger valves and better cams. We’ll do all this when we put these motors in the 38. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6c19ba3f6.jpeg Going back to air gap intakes and Holley 750’s https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...cee4ed40f.jpeg Got the drives repaired and painted, I have some new anodes coming. The boat will be in salt water for 4-5 days when we go on the big trip to staniel. |
Why the burnt valves? |
I pushed it too much with the blowers I think. I had 9.2:1 compression before the blowers which is not ideal. When we go back together in the other boat the heads and cam will be a purpose built setup with the blowers in mind. |
Im no engine expert at all but i think compression with a blower needs to be more in the 7:1 or 7.5:1, and i think you can achieve that more with piston design than with a cam swap... make sure you get the right recipe! |
Yeah you’re right jeff for some reason I was thinking the chamber size was somewhat different beteeen these heads and the ones I was looking at using. They’re actually about the same. Swapping pistons on these motors may not be feasible, since I would still be at 489 cubes. I may be looking at different motors. And then the 256 blowers aren’t really big enough. whose idea was this anyway?? 😳 |
I had these caps made a while back, made them where I could grease them at any time and keep grease on the pins. I have new impellers for the pumps, and I’m replacing the bilge float switch as well as many other things. I have the fuel gauge working for the first time ever in this boat. Getting ready to head out of Harbor towne marina in dania beach on June the third or fourth. (Depends on if we go straight over or spend a night in Bimini , Chub or Nassau. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...cb6bcc24c.jpeghttps://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9e5232260.jpeg |

Hey I appreciate that! Is that like 3/8" thick? Or 1/2"? Thanks again.
|
3/8" My friend had plastics company duplicate it. It looks original.
|
Inspiring project!!

This boat is available if anyone would like to have it. It is dirty and dusty, been sitting in the shop for a few years. Has not seen any rain since restored except for one short shower in Bimini in 2017 lol.
I used some parts off this boat to finish the 38. It needs: Engines Left TRS drive (wrong gear ratio) you’ll get both drives with 25 pitch props Gauges trailer jack Hydraulic steering pump (I may have one) <<<EDIT>>> Needs K Planes The good: Low hours merctrans transmissions All wood in hull has been replaced, except engine stringers. Boat was painted about 10 years ago, and still looks good, been under roof except when used. Original upholstery in good shape for age. Low hours Latham hydro steering. Trailer has new axles and new disc brakes. Will give you two extra wheels with tires. Boat has been to Bimini Bahamas three times and handles rough water very good. I’ll take $2000, would like to see someone enjoy this boat again. if somebody has a rotten boat with good hardware here’s yours ticket to the water. Swap over and go. i need the space more than I need this boat! https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...85765a1c6.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6863877a8.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...719fe2c65.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b06c526a7.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...cacb3bb3b.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...253b9a294.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a5ebfcf2f.jpeg |
That is more than a fair price for something solid !!!
|
Man I would be all over this if you were closer. I have a 1979 wellcraft 300 outside on blocks with a very rotten transom.
