Default Sacrab 29 with twin 350s vs. Single 502?

More curious than anything but trying to do my research for when I'm ready to bump up in boat size.

I've been looking at roughly the 1995-2001 model 29s as I really like the size and looks.

So what are the pros and cons between the twin small block and single big block boats?

Looking for performance differences mainly as I understand the maitnance will be more costly with twins.

What are the true gps speeds of each in "stock" form?

Thanks for any info!

What's more satisfying than firing up one loud engine?

The second. It really does put a smile on your face.

Also the practical things like being easier to maneuver around the docks. I don't know my scarabs but I would imagine the small blocks would run better.

i had a 29 with a single 540bbc with 825hp although it ran great, with twin small blocks in rough stuff i feel it would handle better. when it was a single 502 mpi it ran 62mphish the twin 350's 300 hp bravo ones run 70ish. buy the twin engines with small block mpis and bravo ones you will love it

Here is a link to the Wellcraft database. Just pick a year on the bottom left and select scarab 29. They have performance data for either twin 350 boats or single 502 boats depending on what year you select. Looks like twin 350's are a bit faster and a bit heavier. Me personally I would go with the twin 350's. Once you make the leap to twins you will never want to go back to a single boat.

I have seen multiple posts about the twin 350 29 speeds. Mid to high 60 should be very accurate. Just remember just because you touched a certain speed 1 time in a boat does not mean that it will run like that every day. I was very surprised to see how my 29 with new merc 383 ran. So many variables in the mix.

P-29s are bad a$$....... I was going to say to the OP, keep your eyes open, some of the mid to late 90's 29's have been repowered by now 383's would be nice or 406's....... even some twin big blocks out there.

I have the same size boat(donzi 28zx) with twin small blocks and I could not be happier. I had the same thoughts as you when I was looking at boat.... Looking back I don't know why I questioned the small block

Now that's a handy site!

Speed isnt a huge deal with me aslong as I can run a smooth 65+ on the small Ohio inland lakes I run, my 22 is on the ragged edge at 65 and with staying the night at the lake I am ready for some more room and comfort. Depending on my budget over the next coming months I will either be going with a 29' Scarab or dare I say a newer Nordic heat.

Thanks for the info guys!

How does your 26 run? 502? The 26 seems much more hard to find on the market. From the reading ive done its roughly a 60-65mph boat stock, correct?
