New 377 owner
Hey Everyone. My father and I bought a Scarab last weekend! The boat underwent a partial restoration and repower a few years ago. Recently built Supercharged 540 tall decks with speedmaster 3's. New transom and Freshly rigged back seat to stern. Wanted something with a big cabin and roomy cockpit, even better that it's staggered with 700hp a side! A previous owner deleted the windshield for a race fairing, which looks awesome in my opinion. The boat is far from perfect but with the power/drive combo and solid hull for the money, we couldn't walk away. Here's a few pictures!

Me and my dad have talked about it for years. Any upgrade suggestions welcome! |
I remember seeing it for sale lately! Nice boat ! Nice power for sure!
|
Excellent find for sure!
Find out the gear ratio. 1:68 don't have much mesh in the upper gears and will tear them up with that much power and weight. |
Looks nice
The ads caught me eye also Congrats |
Very nice. Congrats.

No hydraulic steering?......Sharp boat!

Update on our recently acquired 377. Unfortunately we had a mechanical failure in the port side engine. Engine has to come out and cam needs to be replaced. Plan on inspecting everything to make sure theres no damage to bearings etc.. Original builder used the wrong distributor gears. Stbd side engine survived by the grace of the offshore gods. Always something with these damn boats. To be continued!...

Thanks on the boat. It’s been a long time coming. We were going to run it a few hours today and check again for a few pesky steering and oil leaks. Pulling away from the dock, right motor wouldn’t idle, kept dying. It was running crazy rich. Both motors had been very healthy and would fire right off with just a bump of the starter. We screwed around with it for hours, trying to set the float levels, there’s two Nickerson Holley carbs per motor.
We dropped the right front carb float adjustment screw between the exhaust manifold and couldn’t get to it, so I dropped the trailer and ran to the shop to rob a screw off one of my extra carbs lol. We couldn’t get the engine running right and had actually bumped the pier with the bow when the right motor suddenly loaded up and quit. It left a place we’re going to have to repair now lol. We finally loaded up and got back to the shop, and being the boat idiots we are, we connected the hose and kept screwing with the right front carb, kept overflowing, couldn’t get the float valve turned down. Shon says “Let’s check it for trash”, and there it was, an aluminum shard about 1/2mm wide and 1/4” long. Keeping the float valve open. It was a thread from when I took the fuel lines loose to pull the blowers off a month or so ago. I tell this story to let you know I feel your pain brother! These boats will break your heart on the regular. You have to be the kind of guy who doesn’t learn lessons well. 😂 |
I wonder why the cam did that? Have you looked at the other side?

Original builder used the wrong distributor gear. Should have used a bronze or poly gear. The stbd side survived but was getting ready to do the same thing.

That's what I figured. Maybe luck will be on your side and nothing else got damaged. Are you guys going to try to pull the motor soon?

UPDATE! Engine was pulled out today, hopefully have the full damage report by the end of the week. Expecting the worst but fingers crossed hoping for the best (considering the situation) |
Good looking boat what ended up being the outcome?

What kind of speed were you running with the original Setup?
|
I`d hate to tell ya but this boat will keep sucking money out of your walet like it`s going out of business.
Been there done that for 12 years. I could have bought a new boat with the money I sank into that Cig. |

It already is. Deciding to build another set of engines and set the 540's aside for something else reeeeeally wasn't a smart financial decision on my part.

Just a little update, had a new cover made, all 4 carbs rebuilt, purchased rebuild kits for the Weiand 256's from TBS since I didnt like how the one felt spinning by hand. Cylinder heads are finished, rotating assemblies are balanced, blocks are machined. Gotta buy oil pans still. Got some fiberglass work i want to do to the boat while its still apart. Want to do a full bulkhead behind the back seat (eliminate the hull shake which most scarabs have with the factory half bulkhead), replace the vertical supports in the engine compartment and some other odds and ends. Here are some pictures. Been playing carpenter with my house so I havent gotten much else done on the boats.

Looking good!
