i get the larry smith hull built
but what model 38 is it? A special larry smith design or a 38 kv?

Larry Smith design,38 kv’s are different hopefully Lars chime’s in he seems to know more about them..

Same mold but built to a higher standard iirc. Dan archer would know for sure.

The hull is the same on this Team Scarab 38 by Larry Smith, as the one he designed for the contemporary 38 AVS, except it's a traditional straight v-hull without vented steps.

I don't have the experience to explain how much better a straight hull on the Scarab 38 handles really big power compared to one with vented steps, but it's supposed to

almost be a necessity if one wants to run into the triple digits, according to the ones in the know. The hull sides design was changed on the newer 38s, like these, compared

to the old 38s, to obtain an even stronger structure. Dan MacNamara, who runs Team Archer Marine in Huntington Beach is the one who by far has the most knowledge

with regards to the Larry Smith Scarab designs. He both restores, upgrades, re-rigs, and completes some of the few new Team Scarab boats around. I bet he'll chime in

after the LOTO Shootout.


Here's an article below from 2001 with regards to the Wellcraft 38 AVS. The boat priced out at $253,000, so with the much more expensive materials and the custom work to

build the 2002 Larry Smith we're looking at here, I would be surprised if this boat came in under $500,000 new, probably quite a bit more. The construction hours to build at

this level of strength and attention to detail are not for the faint of heart.

The hull design of the 38 KV, and this is, like I explained, different, so not the same mold. The KV has a unique hull side design, whereas this
has the convex hull sides of say the Wellcraft 377 and later 38s. Take a close look at the 38 KV and notice it.

All of Larry's 38s are from the same mold. The 38s that Wellcraft built are from a mold built from a plug out of the Team Scarab mold as the years went by, they changed sides by filling in the body line that was about 8 inches below the gunnel molding and then when the AVS came out it was an insert to the original mold that is why the AVS hull sides are about 4nches shorter than the straight bottom boats. The 38 KV is the original 38 race deck that Wellcraft modified to make the KV deck after Larry came out with the wedge deck 38 to match the 46 and 43 cockpits which were wider than the original 38 race cockpit..
