Re: 98 38 Scarab windshield/Winddeflector

There was a company located in Sarasota who made windshields/screens and cabin doors for Scarabs in the early 1990's called Viplex. I ordered an add on windscreen for my 28' around 1994, cost more to box it, and ship it than to build the piece itself.

Does this windshield look a lot like the one on the Donzi home page???
http://www.donzimarine.com/
I wonder if it's the same mold - Sarab Sarasota, Donzi Sarasota...mmmm

Re: 98 38 Scarab windshield/Winddeflector

You know, that's a very good thought!! Might be worth a call to Donzi and some of the other manufacturers in Florida to find out who's OEM'g their wind screens.

Most of the manufacturers are simply assembly points. I know Wellcraft claimed to have some craftsmen on the factory floor, but most products were manufactured by small shops from the immediate area. Viplex was one such company. Sarasota Chamber of Commerce might also be a good source to locate info about the company.

Re: 98 38 Scarab windshield/Winddeflector

Just did some research on Viplex. Got bought by Uniroyal Technologies in 2001, who went belly up in 2002. Somewhere along the way they were purchased by Polycast, who got purchased by Spartech. So I figure that they must now be Spartech Marine up in the Vero area (who doesn't use Polycast materials but Chemcast from Mexico - go figure how THAT works...
We're currently tooling on that windshield for Donzi and should be in production in about 30 days. When we're making an item for an OEM we don't go direct but if it fits the Scarab I think we can do it.

When I called down there I got the same story, but I find it hard to believe.

As soon as they find out a person on the other end of the phone line owns a Scarab, the interest level to help drops completely. Somebody, or some company must have had the forethought to buy up plans, molds, parts, etc. Maybe I'm wrong, but one would think the amount of Scarab's on the water today would still drive an aftermarket for a specialty shop selling those custom parts.

Some pieces of our boats were made by factory craftsmen, but others were jobbed out. I would think somebody still has those plans and molds.

Re: 98 38 Scarab windshield/Winddeflector

I think Spartech Marine had the molds but they've been backing out of the windshield business period.
We've been tooling for them one by one - we're tooled for three of the versions and hopefully we'll get the one that goes in the inside radius of the mold. We've been promised a sample thanks to the members here at Offshoreonly.

I looked it up and it doesn't seem too hard if you have the old ones.

I'll make it if you can get me an old one in any condition (cracked, crazed, etc) as long as it's all there and not necessarily in one piece!

98 Windscreen/fairing

Hi all,

I'm currently looking to buy a 1998, 29' Scarab out of NJ. The seller says that the windscreen/fairing may need to be replaced. Is this a difficult task? I'm pretty handy with tools, but I have no exp. working with fiberglass. If replacement requires drilling and punching out rivets and replacing them, I can do that. Any info. is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sulfur1

Need a Windshield for 87 scarab III

Well, took a wave over the front on the weekend...outcome, shattered windshield into about 30 pieces.

Where, how, can I find a replacement? I have read many of these forums, but none have given an answer on how to find a windshield for older scarabs.

Even a template would be a godsend!!!

Just received my windscreen yesterday from Millers Landing for my 38' Scarab (1998).It came in a nice wooden crate all protected and even included the mounting srews and spacers .Mike

Gilcustom 09-18-2007 11:46 AM

Hello Michael,

Would you happen to have the actual part number and the address it shipped from? Called Millers and they said they can't get it... even spoke to Mike?

handreasen 09-18-2007 09:31 PM

Just purchased and recieved mine. Purchased through Scarab dealer in Tucson, AZ. (Catalina Marine). Cost of purchase was $500.00, shipping from florida to Phoenix $100. This was proper part for 99Scarab AVS, but did notice material thicknes reduction from original. O well it fit and looks great.

Michael Garibay 09-19-2007 01:35 PM

Part number on my receipt is --P/N WEL-1901-6820

Carlos, Give these guys a rough idea of what one might cost from you, and you may be able to get them interested, especially if the new ones are being made out of a lesser material than the original was... jmtcw

[Hello. Do you know if the one you have off the 38 will fit the 31 excel? Is it tinted? Thanks! Frank

Wind deflector

I can make the wind deflectors for these boats. They are made out of fiberglass you may call me if anyone needs one. Also I can make you Race hatches for the 38's. They are the hatches the race scarabs had, and provide adequate clearance for blowers etc. call me if anyone is interested in any deflectors or hatches. 515 229 0233 and ask for Tim thank you.
