If it's popping & backfiring, its an ignition issue. Do you have coil over plug w/a crank sensor? Or is it a conventional distributor with a pickup inside the distributor? Scan data wont show you...

Did it have any issues with blow by before? If not, I'd look at doing a compression test & leak down test. If you've always had that problem, I'd look into creating a positive closed type IV...
