I am with you on your post Fred. There are or can be a ton of variables, but personal preference, and especially how much money a person has to spend on an engine project will most certainly dictate...

I agree with the concept of your statement. I am a firm believer in sacrificing some top end HP for good throttle response, and good drivability especially in a marine engine. :)

Ratman, This whole time as you were speaking of "Mer" (something I, and I am sure others have never heard of) I kept thinking you were speaking of "Merc" as in MerCruiser.
