You most likely need to pull the drive and replace the parts. that is if you determine they are bad first. I tried lubing mine before and it didn't help. New parts made it shift like butter.

It could be the linkage and shift detent system...

It could be the linkage and shift detent system behind the back cover. They get corroded and cause this.
Part # 14 and 38....
