If this kind of corrosion is typical of a certain geographic location , I would start looking for a crashed UFO under the water somewhere ..

Not much is more corrosive than hot super salty water...

I have dealt with outboards and outdrives sitting in the water on a monthly basis in all conditions in a commercial element in saltwater.

This is not normal degradation from lite corrosion .
