Edelbrock aluminum heads (oval or rec port) are listed as just under $1500 in Summitt less valve springs. The include the larger (2.25/1.88) valves and the exhaust valve is Inconel.

When you lost your 8mph, did you lose rpm also? If your rpms were up near max, then you could try a 24p b1 to pick the speed back up.

My 454 read ~80 on 1 cylinder this fall. A teardown revealed a cracked head.

Rod length has little to nothing to do with power production.

If I had a 502mag with a solid bottom end, I'd put either a set of AFR 305's (http://www.airflowresearch.com/) or Canfield 310's...

Upgrade the cam to make peak power in the 5,500-5,800rpm range, put on an Edelbrock Performer RPM AirGap intake and get a set of stock 496HO exhausts (restrictor removed) to improve of your 454's log...

My 24' Chaparral Villain III ran 58mph on GPS at ~4,800rpm turning a 21p Mirage. Same boat ran 61mph on GPS with a 23p Ballistic turing ~4,500rpm.
