Transom straps for aluminum trailer?
#1
I just bought a new Aluminum Loadmaster trailer for my boat. Where and how do I hook up the transom straps to the trailer. The bunks stick out about 2 feet past the back of the trailer and not sure how they will work?

No, not a protector. The bunks just extend out past the rear of the trailer. The boat sits on the bunks past the back also. Here is a pic of the trailer I bought.

When I added them to mine, I bought some S/S heavy duty U bolts and back both sides up with washers and nuts and drilled them where they would be the easiest to get to and best place to hold down to

Thanks for the help. My main concern is that the bunks stick out past the last support for the trailer. If I mount them to the trailer, they would have to come back another 2 feet to reach the back of the boat. If I had to slam on the brakes wouldn't the boat still slide foward?

Good point. Maybe look at doing a strap from left to right and hold down across the hull ... over the rear hatch. Also I always install an adjustable turnbuckle type stop from the bow hook ....back to the trailer from to keep the boat from sliding forward. And I set this once the boat is on the trailer. Or even use a yellow come along -- racheted type strap
I just checked all my pics.I thought I had a pic of the setup

You could run a strap from one side of the transom (eye), under the bunks and connect to the other side of the transom. That wouldn't keep it from sliding forward, but it would stop it from coming off of the trailer. You could also through-bolt an eye through each bunk.

How to keep it from coming forward.......is a H/D strapping device from the BOW hook (at the winch) on angle down to the trailer (running towards the rear)
Now the strap over the top is to try to keep the boat from bouncing off the trailer, besides falling off for any other reason
What does the trailer manufacture say...........??? They built it

I wouldn't be running anything OVER the boat. . . . could only do damage on rough roads/railroad tracks/potholes/etc...
Transom straps are not really designed to keep a boat from sliding forward on the trailer. Even if you have them mounted from the eye straight down to the trailer, they will still allow the boat to move forward on the trailer a little bit... they are there to keep the boat from bouncing off the trailer on rough roads or to keep the boat from coming off the trailer in an emergency move on your part as you tow it down the road (swerving, going into the median, etc...). As stated above, to keep it from moving forward, run a line/chain/strap from the bow eye BACWARDS to the trailer.... I'd just put some heavy U bolts in the trailer frame and strap it to those... it will do the job they are intended to do... keep the boat ON the trailer.

I bought the same trailer a month ago. Same problem. I ended up moving the boat forward on the trailer and cutting some off the bunks. I had very little tongue weight with the boat all the way back. Now I can strap to the trailer but the straps are still going forward. It also pulls much better now.
