Default Ford tranny performance improvements suggestions

I am looking to upgrade our SUV but trying to get a while out of it and enjoy the no payment stage of ownership. . We currently have a 00 Explorer 4wd and tow a 20 ft bowrider ( about 4000 lbs). It has the 5r55E and the 4.0liter SOHC. Truck does so so be itself but never towed well. Have had a could valve bodies replaced under factory warranty and now has 60k miles on it. Tranny performance has gone down some again and I have a 3rd party warranty and tried to get a tranny shop togo thru it. The tranny shop guy tells me the warranty company will want to road test it and no way they will cover it it is a car type SUV and he said even if he takes it apart it will not shift any better and still slip when it tows the boat occasionally. True when I drive the truck (not that often, it is wifes daily driver) it shifts OK by itself most times but the logic of the tranny always sucked in my opinion though. Anyone have thoughts on a chip to up the line pressures and shift points?
Am I wasting my time trying to tow a boat with a car type SUV?
