Does anyone know what years that Mercruiser used the MerCtrans II and what years were the B/W trans used? The reason why I ask is my engine is a 420 HP 454, which from what I understand was produced 87-89. The trans that I have is the MerCtrans II. And from what I can gather, Mercruiser went from the Mer trans to the B/W before 87. The boat is a 78. So is this the correct trans for this year model engine? The only serial # that I have found is on the top of the bell housing. The serial # is 0014128, model # MOM-E.
Thanks

MerCtrans was used by Merc. mostly with small block Chevs. and 330 HP big blocks through the late 70's and into the early 80's. I have never seen the factory package that Cyclone 420 with the MerCtrans. (although I can't swear that it NEVER happened) My guess is that the transmission is probably what came with the boat but the engine was upgraded somewhere along the line. --- Jer

this is kind of informal but i've never seen anything above a 330 trs that came originally rigged with a merctrans; all staggered installations and 370 cyclones and above were borg warner
