Advantage v Disadvantage of not running a thermostat

metals wear faster at colder temperatures. you'll shorten your engine life.
also would probably make less power if it ran too much colder.
not aware of any advantages.

The only reason I'm asking is because when I was winterizing my boat this winter, I took the thermostats covers off and discovered the previous owner took out the thermostats. Why would some body take out the thermostats? I can't figure out why or what the advantage would be.

because the long term effects of salt water have decreased the flow so with the thermostat in it was over heating - took therm out and ran OK. So, hows my old boat treating you?

Cool, no problem. I am the third owner and never got to meet the original owner. The boat orginated out of Phily. Just can't figure out the thermostat situation. Maybe it did over heat buy it runs great with no thermostat. It just takes a wile to come up to temp.
