Yup it works. Depending on how much you have on there it can take some time but I have done it a few times. Used a mild scotchbright. Don't forget to cancell out the acid when you are done. It will also go after your block so you want to be carefull.

Works very well on Niskel(sp?) coated aluminum on motocross bikes. I expect equally good results. Ditto on getting the acid out.
