I have the stock Merc 55A alternator in place and am having batt charging issues since I run a bunch of gear (GPS, Sat Radio, Radio, 4 channel amp) and go through a lot of low rpm chanels.
What's a good alternator to upgrade to that would charge more quickly and hopefully at low RPM?

I just did my prestolites for 110 amp one wires and I look forward to seeing if they do the trick
I also found them on e-bay and the guys I got them from were very helpful to make sure I could go to a 1 wire setup without hassle

Most of the ones I have been seeing are all either 55amp or 65amp. Are the 130 amp ones the 65 amp models where they output 130 amps at high rpm with a minimum of 65 amps at low rpm. Is that right?
Also, which is more desireable, one or three wire?

Since I already have my motor half torn out I'd like to redo and upgrade the electrical.
It's a '96 454 mag MPI rigging with the V groove pulley and 3 wire alternator. I'd like to up the amperage and do a three battery/one switch set up. One battery for starting, and two in parallel for the house, stereo, etc.
I can only find a one wire HO alternator with the V groove pulley. Is this doable?

Put one on mine to keep up with stereo upgrades . Especially at low eng speeds. Basically a converted caddy escalade alternator with screens and stainlless brush holders ect. The girth will strain the longer mando brackets.maybe the orig orange output wire. And possibly be on the fringe of what 1 v belt will handle without slipping. But get it right, and you wont be dissapointed.
