Default Latham steering?

My Magnum has Latham steering and it feels great accept it's fairly stiff.

Are there power versions or is this how it's supposed to be?

Thanks.

A full power hyd. steering system will have two lines that run from the helm directly to the cylinders and one pressure line and one return line that run to the power steering pump, four total .Does your boat have a power steering pump? Also there is one other style called an add on system that uses the stock steering cable and the hydraulic cylinders are plumbed into the stock "brazil" valve (control valve) and the hydraulic lines are not ran to the helm, just the stock steering cable. I hope this helps.

Thanks guys.....I probably should have asked when I could actually look at the boat......but it's in storage 300 miles away.....

I don't think it's got a power steering pump and I don't see any cables either.......?

The helm looks like some sort of rotary hydraulic unit if I remember right....?.....does this make sense?

Question Re: Latham steering?

hello 24degrees, you may have a system sort of like what my pantera 28 has, it has mayfair external hydraulic steering with two external lines running to both ends of the cylinders which are attached to my TRS drives, no power steering pumps, just a aluminum canister filled with oil and 30to 40psi of air pressure, at the helm steering is also a little stiff, i have a hynautic helm, HYNAUTIC MARINE SYSTEMS AND PRODUCTS, looks like a 4 in by 8in stainless+ aluminum box under the dash, from what i have gathered you are creating the pressure by turning the steering wheel, i do not know the advantages of disadvantages, other than even at 80 to 94mph, it will not move , very stiff, very safe feeling , more rotations on the wheel, than full hydraulic, is a hynautic helm totally undesirable?? can it be changed to full hydraulic, what would be the cost?, is it worth it? please replie with comments

Yeah....hynautic.....that sounds like what I might have....but I have Latham rams.

Anyone have any more comments on the Hynautic set-up?

Thanks.
