CLeaver Choice
#1
What is the difference in the 2 types of cleavers styles? My Cafe Racer (TRS Drives) came with 2 different types plus a set of mirage props. I have been running the Mirage's last summer and wondering advantage switching to cleavers would have.

The cleavers you have pictures are for two different drives. The through hub props are for TRS and Bravo drives. They will allow exhaust gasses to flow through the center of the prop if the boat is set up that way. The exhaust tube also does other things to the boats running attitude.
The other cleavers are for #3, #4, #5, and #6 drives. They are the over the hub style. Normally these will be used with higher hp applications. These props can be modified many different ways including diameter to dial a boat in.
Going to the cleaver may have no advantage at all. The Mirage props took the place of the TRS cleavers because they offered more efficiency to most applications. If your boat has a light lay up and the cg is right on and the X dimension it right, you may see more speed with the cleavers but will suffer in the low and middle ends.
I could go on and on with this subject but this is a shortened explanation. Hope it helps somewhat.

No, the shaft is different between the #3 and TRS. The cleavers you have are probably for the TRS. These were popular in the late 80's when the other style exhaust thru hub cleavers you have were the norm for a high performance boat. They looked better, however I never found a boat they worked well on. You'll find many older Cigarettes have them mounted in the bilge as spares. Compared to what is available today they are only good for use as an ash tray. The Mirages will work the best of what you have and there are better choices available today. Some will need a drive height change to work at their optimum.

The two sets of props you have will both fir your TRS drive. The props in the left picture appear to be for the TRS drive. We have some customers who still run them and are very happy with their performance.
To verify if the props in the left picture will fit your TRS drive look at the forward end of the prop. If the hole for the shaft has a bevel on it, it will fit your TRS drive. The bevel takes place of the thrust washer. Then you use an old style aft adapter, locking washer and nut. Both of the props pictured will use the same aft adapter.
As a general rule Cleaver style props will tend to lift the stern of the boat while the round ear props tend to lift the bow.
In the case of boats with TRS drives sometimes they like stern lift props. Because the TRS drives are mounted deep in the water they provide lots of bow lift, sometimes too much, so the cleaver props sometimes will have a top speed advantage. The faster your boat is the better the cleaver style blade will work for you. If your boat only has a top speed of 50 mph then the cleaver style blade is not the best choice.

From what I can see here. The props on the left are 19 spline #3 drive props and will not fit the TRS drive! Simply count the splines and see if there are 15, which is what the old TRS cleavers on the right are.
They both work well in the right situation.

15 splines, the splines about 1/3 of the shaft length. I did not see a bevel on the end (opposite of the spline ends).
I'll try them out and see what happens... Thanks for the info
