2 Die, 1 Injured In Boating Accident On Ortega River

POSTED: 7:17 am EDT May 8, 2006
UPDATED: 10:51 am EDT May 8, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two people died and a third was seriously hurt when a boat struck two docks on the Ortega River late Sunday night, police said.

Just after 11 p.m., homeowners along Lake Shore Boulevard called 911 to report a boat had crashed in the river. When police arrived, two were already head. The third occupant of the boat, an older man, was airlifted to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

The victims' names were not immediately available.

Police said the boat struck and went under one dock, then slammed into a second. They're still investigating why the crash occurred.

Even though it happened at night, officers said they could see easily see the docks when they arrived at the scene.

"From what we've seen, everything's well-lit out there. There's some nice, good moonlight and some bright lights out in the back," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Kevin Hensley said. "I'm not sure what what caused them not to see and why they struck the docks."

Police and Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission investigators are looking into whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
