I would like to get Jimmy a GPS/Chartplotter as a gift. I am looking for something that is easy to read (one that you can see both during the day and at night) and easy to use. I'd prefer something handheld because he doesn't want to mount anything to the dash. I've noticed that with some of them, you have to buy additional software and install it to get the marine maps. Is this true with all of them?

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best one to get?

for handhelds Garmin is the best. they have a ton of models depending on your price range.

Thank you for the post FeverMike. I was looking at the Garmins. There are just so many to chose from that it is a little overwhelming when you don't know much about them.

I suggest to look at the Garmin 378 or 278C. Both can be used for Land and Sea and their portable.
