2005 Ameritrail trailer - Surge brakes - No salt - 5000 miles

Brakes on one side chatter and shake before they actually catch. It also happens when the trailer is pushing down a hill.

Actuator?
Corrosion?
Shoes?

Any ideas?

Could be many things- grease on the linings, corroded braking surfaces, glazed friction materials, improper friction materials, corroded hardware, seizing cylinders.

Check everything. They're your brakes. You need them to work perfectly every time.

The worst thing you can do to a trailer is let it sit- especially over soil, grass, gravel, etc- anything but pavement is bad unless it's inside.

One side is definately in the wheel drum, assuming they are drum based on the action. Kodiak disk are now competitive in price to convert. You will need to modify your actuator for disk / or upgrade.
