The anodes are sacrifical. They will rot out before the actual metal in your outdrive. There are two types one set for salt water and one set for fresh water. The one in the picture is not the only one on your drive. You have a flat plate on the bottom of the transom and two bolts under the drive. Check them monthly if you keep your boat in the water. Easy replacement. Also, I believe the earlier post is correct, the skeg version shown is now only placed on drives without power steering.
