looking to buy roll back any advice

Be aware that insurance will be significant. If you own a "tow-truck", you are now in the towing business, and have to be insured as such. It might be possible, but I don't think its easy to insure it for personal use. This has been brought up here on OSO before, a long time ago.

It all depends what you're going to be using it for. Most are aluminum beds which we couldn't use- we needed to have a small crane mounted on the back. Ended up having a steel one made custom.
Some things about rollbacks- Insurance is substantially higher and on our worker's comp audit they bumped our drivers into tow-truck driver classification From the additional costs I'm guessing that class is the same as a bomb-disposal technician. We don't utilize the rollback feature all that much but we've learned to anticipate using it a couple of days before just to make sure it works. We try to run it once a week but I'm not sure if it happens. The hydraulic controls are in regular need of disassembly and cleaning.
Overall they're a pain in the a$$ for us but when you need it, you need it.

As far as make and engine - Chevrolet w/ the Duramax engine. We have several of them and you can't beat em. The beds have wood over steel. We haul equipment , etc. What are you going to haul?

Think its the cab over that makes them less popular, so you can find them with low miles fairly new cheap....... Bought the newer brother to this one in early aug:
Mines a 97' with 50K miles, the interior is/was like new for $12K.....

I've never seen a Ford cab over like that. Cab over's are always less expensive due to riding on top of the engine , they're don't have the ride quality like a hood and aren't as safe. But a deal is a deal. The Chevy has an Isuzu engine , very dependable. New ones's are around 50 grand. I've been in the trucking business all my life.

This is my rollback, its a bit bigger than you guys are looking for. Has a Jerr-Dann transporter body on it. It can legally carry just over 25K payload. This picture is a few years old.
