Chris Cat had had a single dyhedral sponson which was widened to accomodate big blocks..... Shadow had multidyhedral sponsons (more sophisticated actually)...but narrower. Result the Chris was a better inboard hull..the Shadow was faster with OB's ..... and had a slightly better ride in choppy water. Slow speed turns (rollout speed) were better in the Chris.

Yes....we won the first race (Me and Wayne Vickers)..... placed in the second with one engine hanging back from broken mounts...and the engines lost their top mounts completely in the third...one of the roughest races I've ever seen. We were out at the western end of the course when it happened (about 20 miles west of Key West towards the dry Tortugas)....a Loooong way back under tow.

As we were coming back we saw Fayva Shoes awash and a bunch of other boats disabled...a complete mess. Understand at that point I had not been in an offshore race in 15 years and had just come off a career driving tunnel boats on lakes and rivers. I was convinced that offshore racing was a disastrous abuse of good hardware........... and should be done exclusively on someone else's nickle...... That's still sound advice

Uh ...this may come as a surprise to you.....but.. that hull had a whole 'nother life before there even was an Awesome. It was the top offshore production design from 1980-1985..... Of course, today it's "obsolete"...... and the Awesome is "state of the art".
