My trailer is an Eagle tandum axel 1998 model with surge brakes.The other day I was pulling the boat down the hiway when I noticed in my mirrors both rear tires looked like they were on fire.I pulled over and axel grease was flung all over the place and the rims were so hot I couldn't touch them.Well I continued on to the marina and they bled the system,installed two new brake cylinders and repacked the bearings.They said the shoes/drums were in good shape.

I picked up the boat today and going down the hiway they did it again.I thought the damn thing was on fire.My truck is a 2005 F350 power stroke and it struggles to pull this anchor.Any ideas?

Did they check the drums for warpage from that heat?

I have had to work behind several shops that have put the left backing plate on the right side and the right on the left. Which puts the shoes reversed of how they are intended to run,(assuming these are drum brakes). Long shoe on back short shoe up front. You may want to pull the wheel off and ck shoes and hold down clips. Has there been any previous brake work done on trailer before you had the occurence?

those f'kin drums are known for that. My triple Eagle has done it too. Only once that hot coming home, couldn't touch the tire sidewalls! Several other times to a much lesser degree on just a couple. I was careful to let 'em cool over time, and completely pumped all new Mystic JT-6 through the bearings. Even at those VERY HIGH temps the Mystic still held together! It got thinned some but still retained color, was not seperated or watery!

Dunking them will warp chit for sure.

If I back this trailer up at all, I purposely YANK the damn coupler back out after with the truck, even to park it. Yes, it's well greased ect.

Kodiak discs are in the cards. I really don't think I need 3 axle brakes with 13" discs though. I believe (front) 2 axle disc will give equal stopping performance to triple drums. That would keep the cost down.

Pro , if those shoes you have on there got grease on them then they are shot and should have been replaced. I used to over grease my buddie bearings thinking I was being safe. The grease would then seep out onto the shoes. I was alright as I always had to buy new shoes! Also what baja express said. Like us1 said they could be warped too.

Check that the axles are aligned properly.

Well i couldnt figure it out and only made short trips for the most part so i dealt with it best i could...grease the hubs before every trip to and from the ramps etc.....well it finnaly gave out and broke on me on a long trip to LOTO.....it SNAPPED off the spindle from the axle tube!!! needed to get a whole new axle and i never had that problem again! so i can only assume the spindle was bent putting too much pressure on the bearings and overheating them....

My left hub blew a tire and caught on fire coming home from the lake once. After that I will never have drum brakes on a trailer again. Kodiak discs are the first mods I make!

2 yrs ago we were coming home and were riding in a buddies Excursion towing his boat. Our other friends behind us see smoke coming out of 1 of the 6 wheels. Pulled over to investigate, then 1 by 1, each of the axle center ruuber plugs popped and blew out a good 5 feet, followed by grease oozing out. Was kinda comical. refilled all wheels with grease and drove another 20-30 min for lunch. Pulled in parking lot and POP, POP POP again. Damn if they plugs didn't go flying across the parking lot again followed once again by oozing grease. Wheels cooled down, regreased and also hit the coupler slide roller with a shot. No more problems.
