Car automatic tranny mechanics onboard?
This weekend while making the 2 1/2 hr trip to the lake, my trusty POS but FUEL ECONOMY 
car had a tranny issue. Took off from a light in 1st gear, (auto) no problem, but when it went to go into 2nd, the rpms just zinged right up there and car slowed down. No 2nd gear. As soon as it coasted back down to where it would normally downshift into 1st, it did and went. But back up to 2 nd gear shift point, again 2nd wasn''t there. I stopped and checked the obvious, fluid and for leaks and all looked fine. After 3 mins of limping along on highway side at 25mph, it started working fine. Made return trip home just fine.
The car isn't worth a tranny overhaul, but was hoping for a simple do-it-yourselfer repair, modulator valve or such.
Any knowledgable mechanics with input?
BTW, '88 Ford, 3 speed auto, with only 50k miles. I changed the fluid and filter last summer just for preventative maintance.

Please if you can be specefic with the model we can assist better.
Around 88 and 89 Thunderbirds had a problem with the overdrive unit locking up after first gear.
Also could have tourque converter could be locking up early.
There should be a solenoid that is computer controlled.
I had this problem with a '91 Tauras from a guy at work with the same symptoms. I ended up taking the pan off the trans. and traced the wire that went to this solenoid disconnecting it from the harness and car was fine afterward, and really made negligible difference at highway speeds.
I have been inside many transmissions with good results. BBB

I had all due respect for you being a FOUNTAIN guy,then you mentioned FORD,then ESCORT.How is that that you get away with driving an Escort to your FOUNTAIN on the water?I'm just kidding with you,I walk to my boat to save on gas from the car to put into the boat. Good luck with it.
PS: I need to type to you about my high water pressure valves on my boat.
