Default Diesel Jetta... Anyone got one?

I am looking for a new daily driver. I know that mwdill has a new one, and he and his wife love it.

I am looking for one with less than 100K miles and around $7-8K; 1999-2002 vintage.

What kind of maintenance do these require?
Are they solid over 100K miles?
150K miles?
200K miles?

Thanks for your insight. If you have something similar for sale, please let me know.

Don't buy a convertible . They don't like it on the roof .
Just kidding . My Mother in law has driven VWs for years and has had good luck .

Motors are good, the Jetta's and all VW's latley suffer from little things like window motors, electrical gremlins etc. I think the fact they are assembled in Mexico doesn't help quality issues.

Brian,
Ther were no real issues with the motors. Just make sure the previous owner used synthetic oil. If not there will be sludge/carbon build up and it is very costly to repair. If you can, spin it by a VW dealer and spend an hours labor to have them take a look for sludge in the egr cooler. They will know what to look for. If it is clean go for it.

As far as the rest of the car goes.... they all have window regulator issues, some trim items break, overall not bad cars. The fuel mileage is awesome with the TDI. I am going to buy a Passat with the TDI. You get 38 city and 45 highway !!!

If you have any questions give me a call. I work at a VW dealer.

I have an 06. We get 40 city and 43 hwy. Comfy ride. 10000 mile oil changes offset the increased cost vs gas every 3-5000.
We put 20000 per year on ours and wouldn't want another car at this time.

They are pretty sweet little rides. Got my wife a passat. You know you can get a mastercraft boat with the VW TDI in it? Funky!
