Default 496 mag to ho conversion ?

Was wondering besides changing the cam and ecu to convert a 496 mag to ho what fine tuning should be done for optimum performance after the conversion ? I asume the engines sensors and adjustments were set-up for the mag engine and need to be re-tuned for the ho set up? RAYLAR you out there ?

Shouldnt be anything else....ie. all the fine tuning is done on the HO ecm. I think it is plug and play.

Correct, it is plug and play. I was pondering the same thing last year when Bob Loyd (Full Throttle Marine) asked why I would spend about the same in labor for the HO upgrade when I could do a Raylar kit for the same labor and just add a little for the parts. Raylar it was. Crownlines are freaking sleds, so it's still not fast, but sure sounds good now.

So what were your labor cost? I hear you got a REAL good deal.

Let's just say it was reasonable.

Assuming you're looking for an ECM...

I am in the final stages of a 496HO rebuild in which we swapped the ECM for a Holley HP ECM. I can't help you with the cam, but I will have an ECM with Whipple's stage II tune available as soon as my we are up and running with it. Send me a PM if you're interested.

For the record, you'd be very well advised to swap out your valve springs while you're at it. OEMs are only 90lbs on-seat. ARP studs, a decent set of roller rockers (which will require valve cover spacers) are also fairly cheap investments in both longevity and performance.

Thanks. Brad.

All 496 ecus are not the same. Need to know the year.

For a stock 496, I would just run the stock springs. They go for 1000+hrs with no issues. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Under,

Fair enough on the springs.

WileyCoyote,

FYI…. Original model year of my 496 is 2001.

Thanks. Brad.
