Is there a directory, sort of like a trademark for boat names? Everyone names their boat, do some people own the right to their name, or can anyone name their boat what they please?

Are the names on boats just a personal touch, or actually registered as part of the state's registration?

Just Curious I am close to purchasing a boat, and have a couple names picked out, i just don't want to copy someone else's name!

Not sure what its like down there, but you can "register" your boat in Ontario (Transport Canada) with a name and not have to put actual license numbers on the vessel. Other than that, you can name your boat whatever and keep the license number on the boat, no matter how many times the name has been used by other boaters...although I am tired of seeing all these sailboats and cruisers named "Panacea"
