My tach is showing the RPM higher then I know the engine is running what may be the issue.

If it is a new tach and the first time you are using it, it has a switch in the back for different engines. It can be used for 4,6 or 8 cylinder engines or outboards. Set it for an 8 cylinder, if that is what you have.
