Default Installation of Bennett ST16 tabs on 242

I just purchased this 1988 242LS in July, the trim tabs that were on the boat were a Bennett model with single actuators and too small the operate properly, they required too much deflection before becoming effective. So I ordered a set of ST16s (complete kit, twice the length) with twin rams per tab. My dilemma is that the existing single actuator rams do not match either mounting position on the new tab plates (the existing plates were properly positioned). I have the Silent Thunder pod which I want to retain, so I cannot mount the rams any further outboard. My choices seem to be:

1. To move the new tab plates inboard and use the old actuator mount as the the location for the new outboard actuator mount.

2. To drill new mounting holes in the new tab plates to accommodate the existing actuator mount and retain the trim plates ideal position. But I believe that may cause twisting stresses on the plates?

I can't believe that with the popularity of Bennett trim tabs and Formula boats I am the first to come across this problem. Any suggestions or experiences would be helpful.

Default Tabs

I myself, (and ThirdBird) replaced my Tabs at the beginning of the season with the original size and type installed by Formula. I can't see how the originals are too small, The original size (purchased directly from Bennett) work perfect on my 242. Seems to me that a 16" tab would be WAY too much. IMHO

Seems you have a dellima too, I know the area on the transom to which you refer, seems like a dual ram would't fit the way the Silent Thunder fits.

You and ThirdBird could well be right, I'm determined to install these ST16s though (note I am stubborn), I am leaning towards moving the plates inboard???? I think............

Looks like you will have to fill the holes, you better hit another section and get some help. Nothing wrong with being stubborn, just have some extra cash.
