Peel ply alternatives?
#1
Need to help a buddy repair a pontoon on his boat lift. Would like to pre laminate a small panel to go inside and match the round shape. I can't find any peel ply locally. Are their other things I can satifactorily use?

Thanks excaliber. Dave, you already turned me on to US Composites and I appreciate it. I ordered some epoxy and 1708 and 1808 etc. My problem is I need something like peel-ply for the weekend and I am leaving to go to the lake in the morning. If I don't get to do the job this weekend then I guess I will order peel ply Monday and use it at a later date. There has to be some old trick like cooking spray and a trash bag or something?

hmmm . . . what are you trying to accomplish with the peel ply? its purpose is to leave the surface of a bagged laminate with a texture to help with secondary bond on successive laminates in the schedule. are you trying to make a piece for the repair and have the texture to aide in bonding it to the old piece?

If your gonna try and make a small curved piece on the outside to match the conturs of the pontoon and then trim it to fit the hole....i would do it the way ive done a few custom boom box's for cars/trucks........take either aluminum foil or masking tape and cover the area that best fits your needs....make sure to cover an area way bigger then what you need to compensate for any dripping/mess.......you can then spray a mist of Pam cooking spray as a release agent and lay your glass ontop...its gonna be a light layer....one easy trick ive done in the past is to get fleece from a fabric store...cut out the shape you want..then mix up a bucket of resin and stuff the fleece in the bucket. Make sure you have some good gloves on and squeese the fleece to help it soak up the resin....just be fore warned that fleece soaks up a good deal of resin so you may have to mix a bit more then what you think youll need! After it dries you can sand the top and start laying more layers of glass till you feel you have enough....when done it should all just peel right off and you can pull the tape or foil off the back side...

Thanks Wally. I was just going to use it to pre-make a couple layered laminate to epoxy in the back side of the hull/pontoon to give me the contour. I was going to put a screw in the middle of it and put enough force so it matched the shape then allow it to cure. Then I was going to do a normal kind of laminate on the outside that should end with more peel ply. Didn't have time over weekend so i am going to order some peel ply today.
