Almost every time you have malfunctioning/acting up lights or instruments, its often caused by poor contacts.
Go to radio shack buy:
And have junior climb under the dash and clean/spray the connections. Should solve the problem.

If the metal surface is discolored, it is severe. DeoxIT dissolves the contamination and protects the surface.

If it does wind up being a bad guage then maybe some one like Lavorsi could rebuild it for you. Just toss in a temp guage for when you have it out for repair.
