Is it normal for a Bravo X1 drive to growl when the steering is at the stops/limit of turn travel while idleing in gear? When I move it a little from max turn angle the growl stops. I never noticed this noise before. The 496HO and drive now has 220 hours on it and this manuver is used when I back the boat out of its slip.

U-Joints are probably in need of replacement.

If it is affected by steering angle, then it is something in the driveshaft area. Does it happen in both directions?
Maybe it is time to look at driveshaft bearings.
Easy enough to check.

Remove drive (six bolts) from transom assembly and slide the drive out (disconnecting the shift cable as you go).

Check the u-joints. They should move freely in all directions. Check the gimbal bearing at the same time. Even the slightest resistence indicates critical bearing trouble.

Don´t ignore the issue. It will get worse.

Do you have the drive trimmed up high when this happen?

If you are idling to your trailer, quite possibly.

It could be that the combination of trimmed up drive (even if only partially) together with full steering lock produces enough angle at the UJ´s causing them to bind a little. It might be no more than that, and you have nothing to repair
However, try to avoid it happening.

Not the PS pump dead heading from being at full lock?

Sounds like growley gimble bearing to me. Pull the drive and go from there.

I too would thing U joints or gimble brg.. Best to play it safe & pull the drive to check em.. Jamie / Lakeside
