Hi:
I have Alpha I Gen II drive 400 hrs, used 5 summer seasons. The oil seal where the drive shaft goes in to the upper gearcase is leaking and loosing pressure. there is no water in the oil.
Can this seal be changed without doing a complete rebuild, checking rolling torque and gear heights, ect..?
Should the entire drive be resealed now that one oil seal has failed?
When removing the water pump, I noticed the drive shaft can move up and down in the lower gear case quite a bit and the warer pump wear plate is slightly worn. Is a little movement correct? or will this need to be check to add more shims? Water pump is two seasons old.
Great info on the Web site!
Thank-you,
Anthony

the upper drive shaft housing seal can be replaced without having to do any rolling tourque checks or reshimming.
the drive shaft in the lower unit will move up and down until the unit starts to move then it sets its own gear lash when the upper brg cone is seated in its race. the groves in the wear plate unless they are real bad will not hurt any thing.
good luck
