Any own a 98-03 Jaguar XJR
#1
I have a line on a 99 XJR for a great price, Black on Black, 64K miles w/ an extended warranty. I was wondering if anyone has or had one?
Pro's / Con's.
Thanks.

PROS - I think the fit, finish, and luxurious quality feel of the car is above and beyond ANY other car I have ever been in - BMW, BENZ, LEXUS. I truely notice it when I am in our Jaguar, and then ride in someone elses "other" luxury brand. I flat out love the car. The car is fast if you want it to be, yet easy to drive in a relaxed manner. The power plant is incredibly smooth, and Power delivery when you are on the throttle is smooth. The car is very quiet inside but nothing sounds better than opening all the windows and sunroof as you enter a tunnel, standing on it, and listening to it roar a little. Be Careful - it will blast through triple digits in a hearbeat.
The car appears to be easy to work on (if you are diy)although the only thing I have really done is brakes, headlights, and oil changes - which by the way - this is the EASIEST car I have ever changed the oil on. No spills, no messes - just really nice filter/oil plug orientation.
My understanding is the transmission is boderline indestructible, but if one does go on you - it is going to cost you big.
Ours is optioned out with NAV, and Heated rear seats. The NAV has proved time and again unbeatably accurate. We have had several instances where we have been with others (notably my wifes mother in her brand new 08 Lexus RX) where her NAV has been wrong and ours has taken us to the EXACT destination no questions asked.
Also - the more you look at the car - the more you like it. It really is a beautiful car, and isn't cookie cutter. Every Benz, BMW, and LEX looks the same in my opinion.
CONS Personally - we have had a small electrical glitch 2 or 3 times where the car has kicked into fail safe mode for no reason. When it does this it begins slowing to 30 miles an hour and locks in 3rd gear. I have a code reader that is able to erase codes. We leave it plugged into the OBDII connection, and simply erase the codes and move on. We haven't felt compelled to take it in because I am worried they would never find the problem. I am goign to eventually remove and clean the Trottle Position Sensor, Crank Sensor, and MAF sensor as precautions - but overall it isn't a huge concern.
We have chewed up a set of Pirelli Tires on the front in 15k miles - BUT that is mostly our fault as the car has been out of alignment twice due to construction in our neighborhood.
The car EATS up premium gas - even if you are not driving it hard. Don't expect 19 or 20 miles a gallon - you will get much less. While I have never checked it I believe we got about 13-15 whle takign a vacation trip to NC from VA.
Also - there is a poor amount of legroom in the back for large adults. This has always been the biggest complaint about Jaguar Sedan's.
CON I READ ABOUT DURING MY RESEARCH
The 1999 (and some 2000 models I believe) used a process called Nikasil plating in making the cylinder sleeves. SOME believe this has caused deterioration in some of the cylinder walls. Admittedly I believe this is usually seen in European models where "suspect" gas has been used but it is a fairly widely recognized "problem".
Jaguar's have gotten a bad rap during the last century about consistent electrical problems but I sincerely don't think they still exist any more so than other car companies. Let's face it if you are going to have cars as sophisticated as they are (with gizmo's) stuff is goign to break. From what I have seen in the car the wiring itself is second to none so I don't expect years of significant electircal problems.
KNOCK ON WOOD FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE
Shoot me a PM or an Email if you need any additional info on it. Bottom line is that I wouldn't trade it for hardly anything right now, and 3 or 4 years from now, when the newer body style becomes affordable my wife will surely get one, and I think I will keep this one after that to drive myself.

My father had a 98 XJR in Sapphire Blue with Oatmeal leather. Had a couple 'Ferris Bueller' type drives in it when he was away on business (he found out- and forgave me. :P )
Here are my pros and cons for the car:
Pros:
Smooth, stump-pulling torque from the SCV8
Impeccable fit and finish
Can be had really cheap
Looks great
Good looking wheels
Comfy ride
Pretty fast for the weight (0-60 in c. 5.4s)
Cons:
Can be had really cheap (dismal resale)
Expensive service if done at the dealer
Not particularly roomy
Expensive Pirelli rubber
Reliability only average
