POWERBOAT P1 BRINGS BACK HISTORIC COWES-TORQUAY-COWES ENDURANCE RACE

One of the most famous offshore powerboat endurance races, the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes (CTC), will be reintroduced in 2008 by Powerboat P1 Management Ltd., organizers of the Powerboat P1 World Championship. The CTC, which began in 1961, will return after an approximate eight year hiatus, August 22-24, 2008.

The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes is an open event, organized in association with the British Powerboat Racing Club (BPRC) and up to 80 craft are expected to participate. The boats will start and finish in Cowes and the front runners are expected to complete the course in approximately four hours, weather permitting. The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes was the first offshore race in Europe and due to its traditionally rough water course, is recognized as one of the toughest offshore powerboating challenges, comparable to the Indy 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Over its 40-year history, the race has been won by legendary offshore racers like Tommy Sopwith, Sir Max Aitkin, Sonny Levi, Jim Wynne and Don Aronow.

“We see re-creating the legendary Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race as an ideal way of keeping our commitment to our UK-based P1 teams, manufacturers, sponsors, media--and our 1.5 million powerboat enthusiasts.” says Jim O’Toole, Powerboat P1 Managing Director. “Cowes is an historic racing site and the UK’s P1 community highly respects tradition and heritage in our sport and this event will lure racers and fans who enjoyed the typically rough water races," he adds. “We look forward to working closely with the BPRC to make the return of the event a resounding success and an exciting Bank Holiday weekend."

"We are delighted that the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes will return in 2008!” states Lord Maxwell Beaverbrook, Chairman, British Powerboat Racing Club and son of legendary racer, Sir Max Aitkin, “The race is an event steeped in history and tradition and has had a strong impact on the sport of powerboat racing.”

Though the event is not part of the Powerboat P1 World Championship series, information will be available from www.powerboatp1.com/ctc. For more information and high-resolution Powerboat P1 photography, visit www.powerboatp1.com/media.

Thanks for the offer to help from HORBA. I don't know what involvement may develop, but let's talk soon to see if your members have any boats that they are interested in racing there...or displaying?....It is not a Powerboat P1 event, but the circuit is supporting it, so I'll learn more and share it with you. Best, Marilyn
