253 Checkmate Convincor Full Hydraulic Steering
#1
I have 1996 253 Checkmate Convincor with a stock 502 mpi. I am looking to self install a full hydraulic steering system. Has anyone done this install on this boat? Can someone recommend a complete system? I have a CRT trim system on my steering wheel. I am hoping that I can continue to use it with the new system. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My hull is a '99 259, which is a bit different than yours. I installed Imcos dual ram full hydraulic steering. In my case, there were 2 obstacles. Access to the back of the dash is limited. I have an access panel in the cabin, the hole is tight, but it is just big enough to slip the new helm in. Plan on donating some blood in there.
Mounting the helm was next. The hole cut in the dash for the cable helm was bigger than the hole needed for the hydraulic helm. I needed to make a plug for it and start fresh. Mounting the rams and running the lines was easy.
The results were great. Once you switch to full hydraulic steering, you will never own a boat without it.

Might want to consider the XS Performance system. Great quality, maybe best price. I installed it myself on my ZT230 - it took much longer than expected, especially trying to get the helm set-up properly. It's definitely a diy job, but will take time.

Have a few setups on my site.

Have access to nearly all of them. Do some research and decide. Many quality units out there.
If I can be of assistance please let me know.
