I usually start with a pallet. I build a frame with 2x2's and sheet it with 1/2" plywood. I end up with a box that is about 4 feet cubed. I ship a lot of engines all over the country, and out of the country. I have never had a problem with these crates and they are simple to build. I can whip one up in about an hour or less.
The shipper I use varies. Lately, Fed-Ex Freight has been the best.

another option would be the standard merc shipping crates ..the motor bolts down on the motor mounts on a steel frame made for the motors ..the steel frame sits in a plastic tub and has a matching cap supported by steel tubes ...the sides fit into the tub and cap. They are real heavy wax inpregnanted cardboard. Maybe a local shop could loan you one? good thing about them is they have the slots underneath the tub for a forklift ....m

I just shipped a motor to Fl from Chicago. I bought one of those 30.00 engine cradles from Summit and built a base a little larger than the cradle. Then I lag bolted the cradle to the base, then built a box around it. It is very strong and hopefully will arrive in Fl with no damage.
