Here in California, boat owners are getting raped financially by the state. When you buy a new or used boat, not only do you have to pay sales tax of 7.25% to 8.75%, but you have to pay the prevailing property, too, the same tax assessed to a home (from 1% to 2%). Imagine if you had to pay both taxes to buy a house.

That's not enough for this "tax and spend" state. To make matters worse, you have to pay the property tax, not only on the value of the boat, but the sales tax you paid to buy the boat in the first place. It's a tax on a tax! Your property tax can be jacked up by local initiatives, too, such as school and water district bonds, which have absolutely nothing to do with boating.

Then for good measure, you have to pay another $10 a year for your stickers, soon to go up to $20 in July, because this greedy state has again spent more than they have, and figure they can stick it to boaters.

You can keep your boat out of state for 90 days, and avoid the sales tax, but the greedy Democrats here are up in arms over that, even though a sales tax shouldn't be there in the first place if you have to pay property tax, too. Plus you still have to pay property tax on the sales tax you didn't pay.

First Year Actual Boat Cost: $109,643.13.

The boat costs almost 10% more just with taxes and fees, plus property tax and registration fees have to be paid every year you own the boat. It is not a one time fee.

Now I see why, even though we have great weather, and lots of boating opportunities from the ocean, delta, lakes, Colorado river and more, yet we rank 42nd lowest per capita in boat registrations in the nation.

I just paid $24 for 2 year registration in Maryland.

Here in Maryland it goes like this:

- 5% sales tax
- $2 title fee
- $24 registration fee

I paid no sales tax in OK - and you don't have to as long as you buy a boat older than a 1999 (2000 for 2009). Tx sales tax - around 8% +/- depending on local rates

Registration was $150 for one year. I think its about $60 in TX.

No property taxes on the boat, but RE taxes in TX are pretty high - that $1,250 you paid would be good for a $90,000 home.

No state income tax - RE taxes offset in TX.
