Had it happen to a friend with 525's. He had a bad neutral safety switch adjustment, computer thought it was in neutral and kicked in the rev limit. You can check it with a scanner or the Rinda program. BTW, it will not set a code.

You may have a Exhaust manifold overheat conditon due to water flow. Especially if you have an aftermarket exhaust manifolds.. If you do, mostlikely The water flow is not balanced.. Also you didnt say if this happens in neutral or in gear. If it is in neutral it is just keeping you from over revving the engine..
In either event without having it scanned & monitored they are all just guesses...
