Default Non-stainless head gaskets - needed for a FWC eingine?

I'm building a low performance big block, and have a 'good' set of head gaskets - but not the stainless composition typically used in a marine engine.

Why would a stainless head gasket be needed if the engine is fresh water cooled? TIA

Antifreeze has corrosion inhibitors. Water does not.

Why f- around? They make marine gaskets for a reason. How much is a head gasket swap worth? Or a leak that ruins your engine?

Not f-'n around, just like to ask "why".

The logic is that the stainless spec is there due to the fact the engine might be raw water cooled. The gaskets I have are not inferior, just not stainless.

Sounds like the FWC negates the need for stainless due to the corrosion inhibitors - as I thought.

There's more to it. Your off-the-shelf automotive head gaskets aren't great in high-stress applications. Even a low-po 330 horse 454 is stressed alot more than the same motor in your average auto. If you go to your GM dealer and buy a head gasket for a 366 or 427 truck engine, you get a much more substantial piece.

All I'm saying is I personally wouldn't take the chance.

Screw gaskets, they're expensive.... just lather both mating surfaces with a generous amount of Permatex gasket maker. BTW, be sure to not plug any of the cooling ports between the head and block!!! I learned this little trick from Red/Green!
